Dr. Jane Goodall Takes Rotary by Storm!

Keynote speech draws over 20,000 Rotarians from around the world

Dr. Goodall addressed over 20,000 Rotarians from nearly 120 countries during her keynote address at the 100th International Rotary Convention in Birmingham, UK on June 24th.

Speaking against a backdrop of flags from around the world, Dr. Goodall shared her message that every individual matters and that every individual can make a difference each day. She highlighted how similar Rotary and Roteract are to her international youth service program, Roots & Shoots, and how collaboration in service is possible between the two organizations.

Dreamcatching to success at the Eden Project – Mission Update!

As part of a year long project between the Children and Young Peoples Partnership in Cornwall and Penryn College, Eco-school students were invited to attend the Dreamcatching award ceremony and conference held at the Eden Project.

The students became involved last year when CYYP asked them about their dreams for the future.  At a workshop held by a local author, Elfrea Lockley, students produced  a booklet of prose and poetry about their concerns and wishes for their environment.

CYYP were so impressed with this the students were asked to carry out a year long project looking at a pareticular aspect of their environment – recylcing and our resources.

Penryn College – An opportunity for enterprise from our Organic Farm – Mission Update!

As part of the development of the ‘Living Classroom’ at Penryn students are currently involved in designing and planning our organic farm.  From next year this will produce for the students a significant amount of fruit and vegetables.  So what do we do with all this produce?

Step in the business students and our enterprise project at Penryn College.  All of next years business studies students were invited to attend a business event to launch the Farm Enterprise Project.  Over the next two years these students will be taking charge of the farm business to sell the produce from the farm. 

Through a process of Apprentice style elimination over the next 6 months the group will be wittled down to a core …

Surveying the scene at Penryn College – Mission Update!

As part of their continual training for our Environmental Leaders at Penryn the students attended a training session on ecology survey techniques held by Dr Jo Henly.  At the session they learned the value of surveying a range of environments and the variety of techniques that can be used to find out what lives in these environments and the abundance of each.

The next session is to bring the data together and decide on a plan of action for the ecology area – what habitats are working and what could be improved.
