Creative Ecology and our Mini-Beast Corner – Mission Update!

Posted on August 10th, 2009 by Agent Latham

Coming to the end of the Summer Term we invited 30 Year 5 students up to the College from across the local primary schools to take part in our creative ecology session on mini-beasts.  Students first learnt how to identify any mini beasts they might find.  They then got the opportunity to collect and view some of the mini beasts by taking soil samples, using sweep nets and collecting from the tree canopy.

In the afternoon session they built a variety of habitats to encourage more mini beasts including insect houses, earwig flats, ladybird hotels, rock piles and wood piles.

Leaden Hall – Activities of the Eco Group – Mission Update!

January 2008 – July 2009
The highlight of January 2008 was our submission for the coveted Green Flag and confirmation on 11th January, after rigorous questioning by the two Assessors, that our school had more than achieved the level required. We were all delighted and the flag is now in place overlooking our playground and new sustainable wooden and copper classrooms.

The highlight of June 2009 was winning the coveted DSCF Sustainable School’s National Teaching Award for the West of England.

We were also thrilled to hear in June 2009 that our Comenius bid has been approved for two years from September 2009. This is a monthly project linking Poland, Cyprus, Italy and France entitled “From Acorns to Eco Warriors”.

However, nothing in Eco-land …

Leaden Hall – How sustainable is our school?

Posted on August 10th, 2009 by Agent S Litherland

If we are absolutely honest, how on this beautiful earth can a school be ‘sustainable’? We are users – and heavy users at that – of resources, heat and equipment. Health and Safety dictates that we cannot cut back on so many aspects of light and heat, while quick responses, financial constraints and necessity dictate that we cannot always select the cheapest options.

However…

What we can do well is to educate the children in our care to consider and appreciate the value of everything they own and how they will live their lives. To understand they have options and to make ethical and sustainable choices.

From the youngest children in Nursery to our fledglings in Year 6, the girls have roles and …
