The Roots & Shoots Awards 2009 – Your Comments

Posted on February 5th, 2010 by Sunil Patel

After the Roots & Shoots Annual Awards 2009 held in December, here is what our visiting members had to say:

“I would like to thank you for the invitation to the Jane Goodall Institute on Monday. Visiting you was a major and special event as you had recognized the valuable work that our “Afri-Twin” project had and continues to carry out.
Mixing with other groups and seeing how their various projects were run, has given us ideas about some aspects of our project as well as furthering “Environmental Awareness” which we will pass on to our school and our African Twin. We hope in time that overseas projects will have the opportunity to visit London to celebrate their success.”

Posted on February 5th, 2010 by UCL Team Leader

On February 1st, 2010, UCL Roots & Shoots Team presented their first workshops to St Michael’s CofE School, Camden. Three volunteers worked with Year One and Year Three.

Year One first learned which animals live in the cold, how animals adapt to cold weather and the ways we can help local wildlife survive the winter. Suddenly a distress call from the future told the children that the world could suffer a devastating Ice Age if we continued to use up so much energy! We imagined how animals in London might cope with the big freeze (growing big, fluffy, snow-camouflaged coats, storing food, hibernating) and we talked about the ways in which we use energy at home and in the classroom. …

Coleshill’s New Birdboxes – Mission Update!

Posted on February 1st, 2010 by Agent Earp

We have placed 5 new bird nesting boxes in our school garden. One has a webcam connected to our interactive whiteboard, so if birds use the boxes, as we hope, the whole school will enjoy watching them. We made sure the boxes didn’t face south in case they get too hot for the birds in the summer, but also carefully placed them out of the prevailing wind. We have also put new bird feeders in several places hoping to attract the birds to nest in the bird boxes.
