Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Brochure 2015

We are coming up to celebrating our 10th anniversary here at Roots & Shoots. Where did the time go? And how far we have come.

It’s not been an easy road. We’ve had our challenges with resources, funding, political roadblocks, global issues and environmental obstacles. It brings to mind one of my favourite poets, Robert Frost, who said “Two roads diverged

in a wood and I, I took the one less travelled by”.

Indeed, in my first year at the Institute, I remember the Government advisor on the Environment, to the then Prime Minister Gordon Brown, stating ‘your programme will never work in the UK’. And here we are almost 10 years later, with almost a million children and 1700 schools involved in the UK alone – not to mention the thousands more on a global scale.

Lesson learnt; never let other people put you off your dreams, no matter who they happen to be!

For those of you who have travelled this difficult and rewarding path with us I want to say thank you. You have made that difference.

For those of you who have yet to enlist; there is no doubt we are living

on borrowed time. We must act now before our impact on this fragile planet becomes irreversible. Please join us!

I would like to take this opportunity
to thank all the schools, organisations and individuals who have helped us along our journey including Disney, the Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi, St George’s House Windsor Castle, The Observer, Quest Overseas, Earthwatch, Eco Schools, RSPCA and National Geographic Kids.

Lastly, a very special thank you to Colin Firth who, despite his incredibly time consuming schedule, has travelled the last six years of our journey with us. It has been an honour and a privilege to have him by our side.

And to Dr Jane Goodall for being our inspiration, may we make your legacy proud.

Tara Golshan
Executive Director, Education
