The finalised activity will specifically designed as a ‘kick start’ for groups who are just starting out with Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots and would like to try a bit of everything the programme has to offer. The activities are geared to using local forests/woodlands as a learning resource so that students can get out and about and interact with their local environment. Groups can try one, two, or all three of the main sections, and are also encouraged to extend the activity by comparing and contrasting their findings about their local environment with the experience of the Jane Goodall TACARE project in Tanzania.

The criteria is not just about how grand the students’ efforts are, but how broad their thinking is from taking part in the activities, so no matter how large or small a school’s resources are, every group will have a chance to show that through taking part they are becoming more conscientious members of society and truly encompassing the aspirations that Dr. Goodall has made the heart of Roots & Shoots.

The trip included successful school and university lectures and Roots & Shoots workshops with a pledge from the Government to establish R&S in the Middle East.  President Clinton himself thanked them for all the work of the Jane Goodall Institute over the years!

The event took place at the Zoological Society of London’s headquarters – a charity devoted to the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats and where Dr Jane saw her first chimpanzee.

Students prepared creative showcases of their contribution in the area of people, animals and the environment and described to Dr. Goodall and the other participants and guests what they had achieved, why it was important and how they would build on their work for the future preservation of the planet. 

Schools were presented with certificates and trophies from Dr. Jane Goodall.

The students from Pembridge Hall Preparatory School for Girls from London took the Gold Award for the Most Outstanding Group and will enjoy an educational trip to Brussels, Belgium in 2012, funded by the Belgian Tourist Office, who sponsor Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots programme.

Bethany Ecroyd Sixth Form student from Accrington St. Christopher’s Church of England School, Lancashire won the Most Outstanding Individual Award and will be joining other young people to take part in an overseas development project proudly sponsored by Quest Overseas

Tara Golshan, Executive Director, Education said The projects this year were outstanding and exceeded all our expectations.  The young people were creative and highly motivated in their quest to make a difference which was demonstrated by the impact their work was having on our environment.                                                         

Roots & Shoots now has over 1500 groups in the UK alone and educational programs in 120 countries with thousands of young people involved across the globe.

Where has this year gone? I cannot believe how quickly time has passed – and yes it goes with the old age saying Time Flies When You’re Having Fun. And fun we have had, here at Roots & Shoots. From reminding ourselves of the importance of living in Peace with our planet’s inhabitants; to visiting Dolphins in Greece; running the Marathon; producing workshops in Finland and starting a fully focused university programme, not to mention the run up to the December awards – we and our R&S members have been busy.

I will let them tell you all about it. In the meantime, as Christmas is coming, amidst all the mad rush for presents and organising festivities, let’s take some time out to remember those who are less fortunate than ourselves, such as the Homeless and the sick and see if we can help make a difference for them within each of our local communities.

After all – that’s what Christmas is really about.

The scientist, conservationist and UN International Messenger of Peace, Dr Jane Goodall, DBE, spends 300 days a year travelling the world raising environmental awareness. In between trips she still lives in her family home in Bournemouth, and she is at Compton Acres for a very special event. The Jane Goodall Rose, described as the ‘ultimate romantic flower’ has been created by Christian Hanak and La Roseraie Guillot. Jane planted the first of 400 of these most remarkable climbing roses on 17 May in the Rose garden of Val-de-Marne near Paris. “The fragrance”, says Jane, “is exquisite”. Today two more Jane Goodall Roses are to be planted, one in Jane’s honour at Poole’s Compton Acres, the other in her own garden in Bournemouth. A third is going to the rose garden of Lord Eden to thank him for a wonderful dinner he hosted, for JGI-UK, in the House of Lords.  The only other one in the UK will be auctioned to help support JGI’s Roots & Shoots conservation and humanitarian education programme which has tens of thousands of groups in over 120 countries – including in 1,500 schools throughout the UK.

Our host for the afternoon is Peter Thoday, Gardens Advisor to Compton Acres and presenter of BBC2’s The Victorian Kitchen Garden. Peter leads a small group of Jane’s family and friends, and staff and volunteers from JGI-UK, JGI-France and JGI-Global, the length of Compton Acres. On this exceptionally warm and sunny afternoon, the gardens are still beautiful even in November. We are joined by a Roots & Shoots group from Ringwood School.

The head gardener has chosen a wonderful sunny place beside the path to be the new home of the Jane Goodall Rose, and there we are joined by the Mayor and Mayoress of Bournemouth, Councillor Chris Rochester and Mrs Val Rochester and, arriving last, the Mayor and Mayoress of Poole, Councillor Graham Wilson and Mrs Sally Wilson. The Mayor of Poole gives a short speech about Jane’s many achievements. The Mayor of Bournemouth notes Jane’s lifelong connection with Bournemouth. An oak tree was planted in January in Bournemouth Gardens by Jane and the former Mayor, Councillor Barry Goldbart in celebration of Jane’s 50 years of research with chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania. 

Then before the rose is planted Jane has all the children, and not a few adults, kiss its roots – to give it strength, she says. Though the Mayor of Poole has the shiny town ceremonial spade at the ready, to do the job properly Jane is down on her hands and knees, fingers in the dirt, making sure her rose is planted to her satisfaction. The Roots & Shoots children all lend a hand. It is a happy, warm occasion. Jane’s love of life and nature raising everyone’s spirits and giving us all a sense of optimism for the future.

Later, the sun already below the tree line, with the family dogs Charlie, Callie and Henry playing on the lawn, Jane plants the second rose just outside her sitting room window. Afterwards we gather for a cup of coffee, sitting by a roaring fire with Jane’s family, dogs sprawled on the floor. Jane is still excited about the Oscar. She only heard late last night that Jane’s Journey has been chosen from an original list of 124 films to make the shortlist of 15 in the category Documentary Feature.  Now she brings up the titles of the shortlisted films on her laptop. Competition is strong but Jane believes that, thanks to the excellence of the team – the producer, director, cameraman, sound engineer and composer – the film might, just possibly, make it into the final five, one of which, on Oscar Night, February 26, will be chosen as the winner.  If the film gets that close to Oscar glory Jane will have to rearrange her packed schedule.

She is supposed to be writing a book about plants. Fortunately she has a lot of it done already. But a previously unplanned trip to Saudi Arabia for the Jane Goodall Institute UK means Jane is not going to be able to make the February deadline. She grins “my publisher is used to that with me,” she says.

We end up swapping creepy ghost stories about Cornish Wreckers and haunted WWII airfields. A splendid ending to a day that was, as Jane says, “truly magical”.

Bournemouth Voluntary Coordinator – The Jane Goodall Institute

There was a ‘rota’ on the back of our door to let us know what jobs we had to do and when.  I was to cook the first evening meal with sho, we made shepherd’s pie – it was not as good as I make at home as we could not get gravy! But everyone enjoyed it. Every day we had lovely salads, fresh bread from the local bakery and a neighbour would bring us fresh figs.  On our first day out on the boat it felt like a ‘military mission’.  Joan was very precise as to how things had to be done and how important it was.  It was then that I really felt that we could make an important contribution to this research.  The first day out we went to Kalamos, we had only been out on the boat for a short while when Sho shouted out very excitedly “Dolphins at 1 o’clock 100 meters!” we were all really excited especially JoAn who told us these Striped dolphins (Stenella) had only been spotted once before in 20 years! JoAn took over 300 photos!

After the first two days out we were based in the Amvrakikos Gulf, where we spotted the Bottlenose Dolphines, there were about 20 in total, a newborn, a calf and a juvenile – we saw them with their mothers and it was so exciting.  JoAn took us to see a mussel farm that had been closed because of pollution.  Each day we were shown films such as ‘Farming the Seas’,   or had lectures about dolphins and sperm whales.  We also had lectures on the illegal use of driftnets, overfishing and fish farms.  Each day I wrote my blog to let everyone know what a fantastic time we were having. Since returning from Greece, our ECO-Interactors, students and staff will continue our work on tree planting.  Over the past 6 years we have planted over 2,000 trees and shrubs in our school grounds.  Three members of our staff are now Tree Wardens for Erewash Borough Council.  We are now taking part in ‘Saving the Great Trees of Derbyshire’.  Working with Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and Erewash Borough Council, we are collecting seeds from Veteran trees in Derbyshire which we will propagate and plant out when they have grown a little.  This way we will help to attempt to conserve the genetic stock of at least some of these magnificent trees and so help safeguard future generations.

London UK– Following the lead of their hero—renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, Ph.D., DBE—young people from across the UK came together in London for a Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Day of Peace event on 26^th September from 11:00am to 3.30pm at Main Entrance City Hall, More London.

 Young people who are members of Roots & Shoots, Jane Goodall’s global environmental and humanitarian youth program— hosted a peace dove parade to support the United Nations International Day of Peace.

A UN Messenger of Peace since 2002, Dr. Goodall established Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Day of Peace in 2004 to encourage Roots & Shoots members and other interested individuals to promote peace in their communities and around the globe.  Members and friends craft Giant Peace Dove Puppets from reused materials and fly the Doves in their communities to symbolize their commitment to peace. In past years, Giant Peace Dove Puppets have flown in almost 100 countries in city parks, backyards, convention centers and even refugee camps. Held high by young hands, the Doves have spread their wings everywhere including the Coliseum in Rome, a monastery in Mongolia, the base of Mount Fuji and even the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro.

This year’s event in London featured a two hour parade with over 30 young people from City Hall, across the Millennium Bridge, past the Tower of London, along Tower Bridge and finally returning to City Hall.  

“With crime and unrest amongst youth today on the increase it is even more imperative that young people get involved with activities that not only promote peace but give them a sense of self worth, belonging and positive contribution to society”. – said Tara Golshan (Executive Director, Education).

“With the Peace Doves, we remind everyone of the truth they sometimes forget—that peace is possible. We celebrate all that is free and noble in the human spirit. And we celebrate all that so many people have done throughout the year—and will do next year—to create a better world,” said Dr. Goodall.

Roots & Shoots Day of Peace is coming up in just four weeks. It is a great opportunity to engage your group, classroom, or family in a project promoting peace. Following Dr. Jane’s leadership as a United Nations Messenger of Peace, members and friends of Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots have celebrated this special day since 2004.

Each year Roots & Shoots groups across the globe build and fly Giant Peace Dove Puppets to celebrate peace. Through flying their Giant Peace Dove Puppets, and planning projects that promote peace, our groups demonstrate their commitment to creating a better world for all people, animals and the environment.

Day of Peace can also be celebrated by simply completing a project that makes a difference in your area. Many Roots & Shoots groups have planted flowers or trees on the Day of Peace in order to learn more about plants whilst enhancing their environment.  Visit our world map of past Day of Peace projects or our Project Database to gather ideas for your project.
