3 students starting their A-level studies at Camborne Science & Community College had probably the most amazing start to their studies of any students in the UK. In their first full week in the Sixth Form they travelled to Adelaide in South Australia to represent the UK in the 6th International Student Science Fair, hosted by the Australian Science and Maths School.

The students had been working all summer holidays on their project, researching the viability of Renewable Energies in the South West and evaluating how these would contribute to the UK’s 2020 Renewables Targets. After several weeks of cold dry weather, it is always a bit disappointing to feel the rain, especially when you are supposed to spend the day outside. This is how some of CSCC students must have felt when they got up one Thursday morning.
However, the wet start of the day did not dampen their spirits when they joined forces with students from both Redruth and Pool Schools and started their ecological event.
Their mission for the day was to plant a total of 90 native trees, 30 in each of the three schools. Armed with spades, forks, wellies and dedication, the students worked for several hours. CSCC opted for a selection of deciduous trees such as Beech, Oak, Cornish Apple, Silver …

In the past few years, Camborne Science and Community College has built strong links with the Ritsumeikan High School in Japan, so it was with great anticipation that three of our students travelled all the way to the Shiga District near Kyoto in Japan last month. Their mission: to present a scientific study at an International Water Forum.
Heavy metal pollution is a big problem in Cornwall. Centuries of mining have left a legacy of damaged ecosystems so our students were determined to raise awareness on the matter. After several weeks of research and field trips, they presented their findings in the hope that others would learn about this issue. Project run by Agent Norris and her year 5 class a.k.a. the “Rosemellin Woodland Rangers”.

Aims:
To design and develop a woodland ecological site on the school premises using the already existing nature area.
To give pupil ownership of the project by getting them involved in the design and some of the work.
To create links with local organisations.
To incite the whole school to use their outdoor area and link it to the curriculum in subjects such as science and art.

‘Hub Club’ – a club for children from year groups 7,8 and 9, who have behavioural disabilities, have unstable homes or who are vulnerable due to different circumstances.
The school has linked with Tony/ Tong Liu from Shanghai, who they support in his tiger conservation efforts.
Newquay Zoo – the kids have linked with Newquay Zoo and are currently supporting them by making enrichment toys out of paper mache.
