UCL Roots & Shoots Team: Workshop 3 – Mission Update!

Today the UCL Roots & Shoots team were sent by Special Agent J to Year 4 of St Michael’s School. Our Mission? Prevent a future Ice Age!

We learned about where our food comes from….. Friederike’s apple came from China, Geoffrey had one from Chile, but Jess had found one from Kent! We decided that apples could only travel from the far corners of the world by plane – contributing to the future Ice Age – so it is a much better idea to buy English apples which have only travelled by lorry. Turner’s Hill School – The Road To Sustainability!

Turners Hill School, has for 17 years, been involved in food and farming. We were adopted by a dairy farm for almost 13 years which each class visited at least once a term. We produced a scheme of work based on the work done on the farm which we linked very closely to the National Curriculum. Unfortunately the farmer and his wife left the area and the farm is now managed in a very different way.

We decided that we wanted to develop our school grounds even more and approached the local land owner, who agreed we could manage a strip of land for growing purposes. For several years now we have been developing this area which we now call our …

Where Does Your Food Come From? – An Iceworld Activity

This activity looks at the food we eat and where it comes from, providing a basis for looking at how much energy goes into getting our food from A to B, and exploring how this might be reduced.

This activity is in two parts, one for pupils to complete at home individually and one to complete as a class or in small teams at school.
