UCL Roots & Shoots Team: Workshop 3 – Mission Update!

Today the UCL Roots & Shoots team were sent by Special Agent J to Year 4 of St Michael’s School. Our Mission? Prevent a future Ice Age!

We learned about where our food comes from….. Friederike’s apple came from China, Geoffrey had one from Chile, but Jess had found one from Kent! We decided that apples could only travel from the far corners of the world by plane – contributing to the future Ice Age – so it is a much better idea to buy English apples which have only travelled by lorry. But what about something more complicated…a CHOCOLATE CAKE! We found out how near and far the ingredients of a chocolate cake could have travelled. Some ingredients, like coffee …

Hi from the frozen north . . . – Mission Update!

As I start to write this I can’t help but be reminded of the high hopes we had but a matter of weeks ago regarding our intended Ice Age Project, and how much closer we all now feel to those who have struggled to survive in such inhospitable conditions be they Human, Plant or Animal.

Unlike many of our fellow Roots & Shoots associates our activities are not confined to term time and as illness had delayed the start of our Ice Age Project we were all keen to get stuck in over the holiday period. I have read the brief on Misson Ice World – basically we have to try and save Scotland from freezing over otherwise in the future it will be derserted and completely frozen. We can stop this from happening by stopping Global Warming happening.
