We have been busy at Port Regis Pre-Prep and Nursery developing our awareness of environmental issues through weekly assemblies, discussion and classroom activities which have been woven into topic and curriculum work, reducing our impact on our environment and the world as a whole, which has inspired the school to take action and change where needed.
Initiatives, opportunities and activities have developed through discussion with the children over the course of a term.
We have taken positive steps to reduce our energy consumption by carrying out energy surveys and audits in years 1 and 3, with positive action being taken when lights have been left on and windows wide open in the chill of winter and spring. We are about to monitor our …

Dust Bowl Project:
Environmental Factors
Agents learnt how and why the American Dust Bowls emerged and then looked at the effects on the people involved.

Kent’s environmental change 80 yrs later was due to many of the same factors and the agents studied how scientists, farmers and environmentalists tackled the problem then and now. They carried out surveys to identify water usage in their homes and gardens and compared the results on the basis of the number of individuals living in each home and the facilities available. Pennington Infant School has recently planted three new trees in our playground. We had a small grass verge with a few rose bushes but they were a bit too prickly for the children to play around! So we relocated them to flower beds at the front of the school and put three Silver Birches in their place. Once they have bedded in we hope to build seating areas around them to fully utilise the area.

Thanks to all that attended the Penryn College Planting event for the new technology area. Over the week the garden has been constructed and last saturday a large group of students, parents, brothers, sisters and members of the local community came together to complete the technology for plants section.
The group planted herbs, a range of vegetables and fruits and flowers in raised beds that will really fill out over the last half term of the school year. This is going to enable students to take home fresh fruit and vegetables to cook at home as well as the food technology students designing menus around the seasonal produce available.
