ACS Hillingdon gets a visit from Dr. Jane!

The middle school students at ACS Hillingdon are involved with Roots & Shoots. Three projects have been the focus this year: Eco-friendly week, helping homeless youth in the local community and a Charity Walk (supporting the vital work of UNICEF, Roots & Shoots and Starlight Children’s Foundation). ACS Hillingdon International School received a Roots & Shoots Gold award for our commitment to helping communities, animals and the environment. This was presented to us by Dr. Goodall herself while visiting ACS Hillingdon!

Accordingly, on April 29th, 2009, banners were hung and IT video conference equipment set-up at ACS Hillingdon International School in preparation for the visit of world-famous primatologist, environmentalist and UN Messenger of peace Dr. Jane Goodall. About 400 faculty and students at ACS Hillingdon were able to listen to Dr. Goodall’s fascinating lecture about her life, working with chimpanzees, Roots & Shoots and her ‘reasons for hope.’ Students from ACS Cobham International School were also able to participate in the event (both lecture and student Q & A) by means of a video conference. Students listened on with awe as Dr. Goodall delivered her stories of hope and inspiration to all of us.

Dr. Goodall was also a guest at the middle school assembly, where she received a special gift for being an amazing role model of a caring global citizen. Students recognized that Dr. Jane Goodall has shown all the International Baccalaureate (IB) learner profile attributes throughout her life! (The IB learner profile is essentially the International Baccalaureate mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for the 21st century. The attributes are: caring, risk-taker, knowledgeable, inquirer, thinker, reflective, principled, open-minded, communicator and balanced.) Later on in the afternoon, faculty at ACS Hillingdon were able to hear a special message for educators and were given the opportunity to ask questions.

At the end of the day, both students and faculty were left feeling empowered and confident that together we can all really make a difference in our world!
