Five New Trees For Old Cards.

Recycling Cards Final Total

5475 recycled Christmas Cards have been counted by our Eco Committee over the last month resulting in five new trees.

Thank you to everyone at Applemore College and in the local community for bringing in your old Christmas Cards for recycling as part of the Woodland Trust and Marks and Spencer’s Christmas Card Recycling Scheme – for every 1000 cards recycled, Marks & Spencer will plant a new tree.

As the month of January progressed, the Eco Committee publicised the recycling initiative using a poster within school and in the local community via social media.

They spent their lunchtimes counting cards and were amazed by the constant stream of cards being dropped off in the collection box at the college reception.

Chloe, who helped with the counting, commented “we only expected to collect about 1000 cards, but we’ve counted 5475! I even saw a Woodland Trust Christmas Card in the box!”

Counting so many cards took lots of lunch breaks.

Mrs Williams, who delivered the cards to the Marks and Spencer’s collection point, was proud that this initiative, which is part of the Eco Committee’s focus on litter and recycling, has been such a success with the result that 5 new trees will be planted.

Miss Greenwood, Learning Support Assistant, who helped the team with the design of the poster said “I think the students involved have done an amazing job, counting all the cards in their own time and backing a good cause. The Woodland Trust do a brilliant job looking after our woodlands, enabling wildlife to thrive. To be able to help towards their charity is something the Eco team should be proud of!”
