Another successful PTA Bag2School Collection – recycling clothes

Thank you to everyone who donated bags of clothes, toys, bags, hats and shoes to the PTA Bag2School Collection just before the May half term.

Bags arrived in reception throughout the week and when the Bag2School lorry arrived on Friday morning and weighed them, we were told that the collection had raised £138.80 for the College.

As a nation we throw away about 1,500,000 tonnes a year of clothes of which the textile industry handles around only 300,000 tonnes – reusing the better quality clothes and recycling the rest for bed manufacture, socks, blankets and the industrial wiper trade. Over 1,000,000 tonnes of discarded clothing still goes to landfill sites.

Bag2School was founded in 2001 to provide a good way to dispose of unwanted clothing, raise money for schools or charities and provide a supply of affordable clothing. They collect quality second hand clothes and then sell them on to wholesalers in many countries of Eastern and Western Europe, Africa and Asia. Bag2School is working with DEFRA on the Textile Roadmap Process for reuse and recycling and the newly formed RITE Group which is committed to sustainability and ethical production of textiles.

Applemore College PTA Bag2School collections involving our local community in recycling, are a valuable part of our progress towards Eco-Schools Green Flag Award, with Waste and Recycling (including litter) being one of the three key areas that our Eco Committee is focussing on.

Applemore College PTA have been an active and successful participant of the Bag2School scheme for a number of years, with the money raised going towards projects within the college. Last year’s collections helped fund the new outdoor table tennis tables.
