Learning about animals and Dr Jane Goodall

As part of the Year 5 science curriculum, we have been studying Animals including Humans and Living Things and their Habitats. It is clear that animals are a passion for many of the children in our year group, so these two topics have generated a lot of enthusiasm and excitement!
In addition, we are required to look at the life of an influential scientist and thought Jane Goodall would be perfect for this. The children were able to apply their understanding of current global environmental issues, as well as previous years’ learning to Jane Goodall’s work.
They conducted research for homework on her endeavours, which helped add an extra level of understanding and authenticity to their final products. It was clear as a result of this assignment that children’s empathy and understanding of this animal’s plight grew.
