The Roots & Shoots program has been introduced to the school through art to both the kids and their parents, who have made banners with their Roots & Shoots pledges attached. The school has been working on a regular basis with the local Wildlife Trust centre, indentifying plants and animals. Children have written letters to local businesses to ask them to stop using plastic bags.
The school have been sponsoring a Gorilla named Djeke. A spell-a-thon was held which raised £1000 for Mencap as well as holding a teddy bears picnic on sports day, raising money for Macmillan. The Roots & Shoots group has been running for 5 years. This year a lot of the focus has been directed towards cancer awareness. £700 was raised for Marie Curie. A garden was dug over to spell the word HOPE and the children planted daffodils in the word, so that they would bloom every spring. […]
‘Hub Club’ – a club for children from year groups 7,8 and 9, who have behavioural disabilities, have unstable homes or who are vulnerable due to different circumstances. The Roots & Shoots Group is spending a lot of time outside in their vegetable garden. They have two teams which alternate each week to tend to the garden and look after the 3 chickens currently being installed. The children feed, water and clean the chickens on a daily basis.
