St Christopher’s High School, Accrington
Every term we like to highlight the work of one particular school. We hope that you can feel inspired by their work and feel encouraged to share your own work with us – you never know, you may become the school of the term yourself next time around! This term we would like to highlight the work of St Christopher’s High School, Accrington, our gold award winners from 2013. St Christopher's are a very active school when it comes to green issues. Back in May 2013, they hosted the Lancashire Children’s Sustainable Conference for 30 primary schools in 2013. 300 pupils attended workshops generating ideas and inspiration to take back to their own communities. They are repeating the event over two days on 8 and 9 July 2014 and Roots & Shoots schools are especially welcome to join.
As well as the conference they also ran a school wide 'Green Day'; have been encouraging pupils to walk, cycle and car share their journey to school to reduce emissions and have been growing fruit and veg onsite in the school orchard and in a polytunnel kindly donated by a local firm. And all that's just in 2013! Previously they have told us about their support of the backpack project (donating backpacks of goods to people in need across the world) and even grown their own calendar!
The highlight of 2013 though was their 'Trashion Show', which was reprised for this year’s Roots & Shoots awards. It showcased the inspiring work of upcoming young designers at the school, proving that a lot of what we might consider to be trash can be recycled into fashion. Special mention to the dress made by recycling old ties, including some from celebrity Roots & Shoots supporter Colin Firth!
