Making bird food

Who doesn’t like watching wild birds in their garden?! As winter drew closer we wanted to help birds prepare for the months of lack of food. On a November Monday we bought some simple items such as:

- paper cups

- string

- seeds (sunflower and mixed) and mealworms

- block of lard

We talked with the children about where birds might find food, what kind of things they may eat and why winter can be hard for them. After this we showed them how to mix the lard and the fillers before stuffing them into the pots. They really enjoyed the mixing process and were proud of their bird feeders. Every child took home the feeder they made and put them up in a safe place. We have so far seen blue tits, coal tits, goldfinches, starlings and robins. Wonderful creatures!
