Charity Feedback for Zimbabwe
Last term, we raised funds through a sponsored Megathlon for a charity close to the heart of one of our pupils in Year 5, Amelia. Amelia's parents travelled on sabbatical to Zimbabwe with Amelia and her younger brother, William, and when they returned, they were keen to raise money for the charity, Kukuru Neshungu.
Kukuru Neshungu is based in the Marondera township area of Zimbabwe and means ‘to grow up with courage’ in Shona. This charity supports young people with profound learning difficulties, where their families would not otherwise cope. Cookery and other essential life skills are taught so they can contribute at home and potentially earn a living.
As power outages are frequent and unlikely to improve in the area, the charity desperately wanted to install solar power at the centre. Solar power would be truly transformative, as without access to a reliable power source or generator, many of their activities are severely restricted. We love a challenge & really wanted to support them in achieving this, so our school took part in a giant Megathlon, with lots of different physical & fun activities, to raise funds.
With the funds we donated, solar power and security lighting were soon installed. We loved looking at the photos, showing the new solar panels, the water tank, which now pumps water and that pupils can use computers now too!
