Dr. Jane Goodall DBE returns to her Cambridge University Roots

Dr. Jane Goodall Ph.D., DBE and founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, returns to the University of Cambridge where she earned her PhD.She will be giving a lecture entitled "Reasons for Hope" on December 4th at 4:00 pm in Lady Mitchell Hall, Sidgwick Site, off Sidgwick Avenue. The lecture will be followed by a charity reception at 6:15pm in Sidgwick Hall, Newnham College. This event will include book signing, organic vegetarian food, juice and wine. Tickets for the lecture cost £5 and £8.50, which includes two glasses of wine. All funds will go to the Tchimpounga sanctuary, reserve and community in the Republic of Congo, focusing on the empowerment and education of girls."I am proud to return to Cambridge University, where I studied forty-two years ago, and meet with members of their Roots & Shoots group", she said. "Cambridge Roots & Shoots is a terrific example of the initiative being taken by the youth and young adults of our world, and I hope we can spread their compassion and dedication across the United Kingdom."Jane Goodall began to work with chimpanzees in the Gombe National Reserve, Tanzania, in 1960. She soon made the startling discovery that chimpanzees were in fact omnivorous like humans, eating meat and hunting, and witnessed for the first time the making and use of tools in a nonhuman primate. After her return to the UK she earned her doctorate in Ethology at Cambridge University in 1965, and went on to found the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 as a non-profit organisation dedicated to wildlife research, environmental education, and the conservation and welfare of all species.This lecture and fundraiser have been organised by the Cambridge University Roots & Shoots Society, which in addition to its international projects is supporting community activities and green practices within the University and the City of Cambridge. An offshoot of the Jane Goodall Institute, Roots & Shoots is a global environmental and humanitarian education programme for youth. Its mission is to foster respect for animal welfare, to promote cross-cultural understanding and to enhance environmental awareness. Roots & Shoots is a global network of more than 8,000 groups in almost 100 countries.
